The term ‘Intake’ refers to the time at which the term or semester of a university starts. In other words, it’s that time of the academic year when universities begin their classes. France has 2 main intakes. They are the September Intake and the January Intake.

September Intake:

• This is also known as the Fall Intake.
• It is considered by many as the main intake in France.
• Almost all universities offer plenty of courses during this intake.
• Students who want to apply for this intake need to start preparing earliest by March. They should start shortlisting universities from March and start appearing for the required exams from April.
• Certain French universities also allow students to apply without IELTS or accept an MOI (medium of instruction) letter for language proficiency.
• Usually, applications need to be sent in starting from May to June and accepting letters/ giving interviews should be done in July and August.
• The deadline for applications in this intake is the mid of July to the mid of August.

January Intake:

• This is also known as the Spring Intake.
• This intake also offers many courses, almost as much as the Fall Intake.
• The process for applying to this intake needs to start from as early as September of the previous year. Students need to shortlist universities and start sending applications latest by the end of September.
• This will give them time to accept letters and give interviews during the month of October.
• Just as the September intake, students can apply to study in France without IELTS or present the MOI letter for language proficiency.
• The deadline for applications in this intake is the mid of November.

Which Intake Should Be Chosen?

Despite the Fall Intake being considered as the main Intake in France, the Spring Intake is as important as the Fall one. It offers almost the same number of courses. Indian students usually prefer the September Intake due to the timing of India’s education system. They finish the academic year around May-June and by joining the Fall Intake they can immediately start their higher education from September. But in spite of that the quality of education is the same in both intakes.

While considering which intake to join, students need to make sure their preferred courses and subjects are available in their chosen universities during the intake. Shortlisting should be done accordingly.
